Teens Coordinate an Alcohol Free Cinco de Mayo Celebration
Members of Scottsdale Prevention Institute's Youth in Action (YIA), a teen leadership group, were responsible for coordinating an alcohol free Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Paiute Park. Nearly 500 parents and children of all ages attended the cultural event. The festivities included; multiple age groups in traditional Mexican costumes, customary dancing, games, music and food complete with 41 entrants in the salsa tasting contest. Members of YIA, which is a subcommittee of Scottsdale Neighborhood in Action an underage drinking coalition planned, set up, coordinated all activities and cleaned up the entire event. When asked what she enjoyed most about the event, Brenda Alvarez, a 14 year old member of YIA stated "Seeing people have fun and learn and not seeing people smoke or drink because it was a party" What stands out the most about this function is the large number of families with strong family values who came out to celebrate.
